VLS Bulletin – October 2024 – Case 010213

VLS 010213 – PCEO 5W-30 ACEA C3

On 18th July 2024 the case was accepted by VLS.

The case concerned PCEO 5W-30 ACEA C3 and its compliance against the stated performance claims of ACEA C3, BMW LL-04, Porsche C30 and MB 299.31 and MB 229.51.

The complaint was that when tested the product returned Sulphated Ash levels of 0.91% m/m against a limit for ACEA C3, BMW-LL-04, MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 of less than or equal to 0.8% m/m and was therefore non-compliant.

VLS sourced and tested a sample of the product. The test results returned for Sulphated Ash were 0.81% m/m which is within test repeatability and reproducibility, and therefore the product was compliant, there was no case to answer and the case is closed.

David Wright, Company Secretary of VLS said “We want to ensure we have the highest standards in Europe for lubricant manufacture, blending and marketing, and we want a ‘level playing field’ for all participants, so that we protect the interests of the consumer and other end users.

In the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (UK) Ltd, we have set our course for stronger industry self-regulation by working positively towards more open and transparent competition that benefits all lubricant organisations.”
